Man on Wire
The other night I watched the incredible critically acclaimed documentary, Man on Wire. A story about a French man’s passion for high-wire walking, and a dream to walk between the Twin Towers, this epic story is mesmerizing. Philippe Petit began tightrope walking in the streets of Paris while juggling and simply being playfully entertaining. Over time he practiced ritualistically in the beauty of his own yard, and eventually did his first major walk between the towers of Notre Dame in Paris. Next he overcame an even larger feat by walking between pylons of the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia. Even after these major accomplishments, Petit had only one goal in mind, to walk between the Twin Towers. Ever since he began this art, his one and only vision was to walk between these enormous buildings. So after years of intricately planning this “heist” at the twin towers, Philippe snuck into the towers one night and he and his crew set up the wire and detailing of the plan. At 7 am on August 7th, 1954, Petit gracefully walked the wire between the Twin Towers for forty-five minutes. Going back and forth, playfully laying on the wire, and taunting the police that were eagerly trying to have him removed and arrested, Philippe did it. After his dream came true Philippe’s charges were dropped and he is known as the Man who walked between the Twin Towers. An enchanting movie, Man on Wire, is a must see to all those with a dream and passion to do something no one believes you can do.
